"I've finished my degree, now what? In this article Ricard Lozano discusses the uncertainty faced by recent graduates in Translation and Interpreting when they enter the world of work. Lozano stresses the importance of confirming a vocation for translation, as the reality of the profession involves long hours, solitary work and limited recognition. He stresses the need to specialise in a specific field of translation in order to stand out in the market and build trust with clients. He recommends researching and contacting translation agencies, especially local ones, to start a professional career, adapting the curriculum to the specific demands of each company. Finally, he emphasises that, after obtaining the first orders and demonstrating quality in the work, integration into the labour market is facilitated and initial doubts are overcome.
Ricard Lozano's article "Cómo buscar trabajo de traducción" (How to find a job in translation) offers practical advice for translators who want to start their professional career. He stresses the importance of specialising in a specific area, such as technical or legal translation, in order to stand out in the market. He also suggests contacting translation agencies directly, especially local ones, and adapting the curriculum to the specific needs of each company. Lozano emphasises that, after obtaining the first assignments and demonstrating the quality of the work, integration into the labour market.

Isabel Hoyos and Javier Sancho (2019). “El peligro de los falsos autónomos. Un artículo teórico-práctico” (The danger of false freelancers. A theoretical-practical article) in La linterna del traductor that warns about the conditions under which many translators work as false freelancers or TRADE, that is, legally as freelancers, but in reality depending on a single client and fulfilling conditions similar to those of an employee. Through real examples and legal analysis, it shows how this situation can lead to precariousness and loss of labour rights. It is recommended to be vigilant and to be aware of the legislation to avoid abuses.

The article "Bc impossible is nothing…" tells the story of Hanna Valenta, who founded her own scientific translation company, Sensus Translation Services, in Stockholm. Valenta, with a background in biomedicine and experience in English- and Swedish-speaking environments, discovered her passion for translation while helping to adapt scientific questionnaires during her studies. Thanks to the support of Karolinska Institutet's entrepreneurship programme, which provided her with resources such as office space, mentoring and business training, she was able to establish her business. Valenta stresses the importance of having an alternative source of income when starting a business and values the collaborative community of translators she found online.
The article "Interpretación en organizaciones internacionales" (Interpreting in international organisations) by Lucía Ruiz Rosendo, published in AIETI's Enciclopedia de Traducción e Interpretación (ENTI) (Encyclopaedia of Translation and Interpreting), analyses the particularities of the work of interpreters in institutions such as the UN and the EU. It highlights current challenges such as the increasing use of read speeches, the diversity of non-native accents, the increase in the pace of elocution and the expansion of remote interpreting. In addition, it addresses aspects such as language combinations, interpreting modalities and admission processes, underlining the need to adapt to the new realities of the international environment.

Virtual Communities
For a more detailed idea
of what a virtual community is, see:
Intérpretes jurados
"The Intérpretes Jurados group is a private forum exclusively for sworn interpreters in Spain, whose purpose is to allow its members to exchange information on all matters relating to the profession of sworn interpreter".
ProZ
Translator portals could be likened to professional social networks. They offer various services, especially directories of freelance translators and translation agencies and job offers. Basic services are free to use, while more specific services are paid for.
One of the most popular translator portals is ProZ. In addition to the usual directories and job offers, it has numerous resources for translators, such as glossaries and forums. Available at: www.proz.com/
As an example of the above, a completed discussion on the ProZ forum on the issue of late payment of translators can be accessed at: http://www.proz.com/forum/translation_in_spain_la_traducci%C3%B3n_en_espa%C3%B1a/116612-morosos.html
Discussion Forums
A virtual community is a group of people who interact through the Internet using different tools, such as discussion forums, e-mail or distribution lists, newsgroups and chat, mainly with defined professional, educational, social and other objectives or goals.
As regards virtual communities of translators and interpreters in particular, discussion forums and translator portals are currently very active. Discussion forums basically serve the function of sharing information on the same topic of interest.
